Pilot 1: Integrating Mindfulness, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, and mHealth Approaches for Treating Chronic Pain and Opioid Use Disorder

PI: Frank J. Schwebel

The Texting ACT+MBRP Study (TAMS) is a two-phase pilot investigation. In Phase 1, we will conduct focus groups with individuals (N=30) who are taking buprenorphine and who are experiencing pain. This information will be used to develop and refine our text message delivered Acceptance and Commitment Therapy and Mindfulness-Based Relapse Prevention (ACT+MBRP) intervention. In Phase 2, participants (N=60) will receive daily buprenorphine adherence reminders for four months. They will also receive multiple daily intervention text messages for two months. These messages are designed to increase mindfulness, engagement with valued activities, and self-efficacy and to decrease craving, withdrawal symptom severity, and pain interference. Results from this trial will be used to create a just-in-time adaptive intervention for individuals with chronic pain and opioid use disorder.
